Who Are WeCLAPA Team

CLAPA Wessex is one of 17 branches across the UK that is run by volunteers. We are made up of health professionals, parents and former patients, and we all share a desire to help and support those affected by cleft lip and/or palate.

CLAPA Wessex work closely with The Spires Cleft Centre, one of the nine designated specialist cleft centres in England. It was created in 2004 following a reorganisation of all UK cleft services and has two surgical units based in Salisbury and Oxford. It has a dedicated multidisplinary team of healthcare professionals providing care for between 90 - 100 new babies each year. It also receives over 100 other new referrals including returning adult cleft patients and a considerable number of non cleft children with speech problems. It has an excellent reputation in cleft care making national and international contributions in research, collaborative audit, training and education. The Salisbury unit has a long history in cleft care dating back to WWII and is proud of its association with CLAPA Wessex over the last 20 years.
